This training, conducted in two parts on 22–23 April and 1 July 2006, set out to train a pool of dedicated para-counsellors and volunteers to support and strengthen the services of the upcoming Princess Anne Crisis Centre for Women, SAWO’s Helpline and support services for women in crisis, and the Seri Murni Crisis Centre for Women and Girls. The aim was to build the participants’ basic social-work as well as legal knowledge and skills in counselling.
Experts from the Medical Social Unit of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Sabah Welfare Services Department, Seri Murni Crisis Centre and SAWO gave presentations on the status of women in Sabah, laws affecting women and children, counselling strategies, case management, and support services available for women and children in the state. The presentations were accompanied by group discussions and group work to enhance learning.
The training was funded by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development and supported by the Sabah Council of Social Services and the Management Committee of Princess Anne Home.
