Training-of-Trainers Workshops on Theatre and Participatory Video for Development

Conducted during March to June 2007 for about six women and men each time, this training-of-trainers workshop was introduced to attract new volunteers to SAWO and raise the awareness of existing members and volunteers.

Theatre exercises are techniques used to facilitate group formation, promote teamwork, build trust, and create a safe space for exploring sensitive issues such as violence against women, human rights and democracy.

A typical session began with warm-up exercises to break the ice before proceeding to other exercises involving such techniques as storytelling, the expert game, frozen pictures and acting. These methods are very effective in bringing out stories from participants and as means to discuss sensitive issues in a safe manner. The session usually ended with group teamwork exercises such as synchronized clapping and foot stamping to create rhythm.

The training programme included an introduction to participatory video and video-making visits to Kampung Kiau Nuluh and Gaya Street. At the end of the programme, the trainers attended the Fiesta Feminista in Kuala Lumpur on 15–17 June 2007 and presented a video documentary on their training.
